Environmental Authority (EA) holders that participate in waste and recycling activities must ensure that they are meeting their general environmental duty and reducing the risk of environmental harm from fires in stockpiles.
The consequences that may arise from a waste fire include:
- Contaminants being released into the air;
- Run-off of firewater, chemicals and combustion products into the soil, groundwater and surface water; and
- Toxic smoke and contaminants impacting upon human health
